This area was a hippodrome in which horse and war carriage contests were organized during the Byzantine era . Later it was called as At meydani (horse arena) during the Ottoman Empire. After the construction of Blue Mosque during the reign of Sultan I. Ahmet in 1616 , this area was named as Sultanahmet square . It is converted to a park after the foundation of the Republic in Turkey.
