Located in Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul , the octagonal domed fountain in the entrance to the hippodrome was the gift of the German Emperor, Wilhelm the 2nd to the Sultan Abdulhamid II and Istanbul in order to commemorate the second anniversary of German Emperor's visit to Istanbul in 1898. It was built in Germany, then was transported and assembled in Hippodrome - Istanbul. It was inaugurated at Wilhelm II's birthdate.on 27 January 1901.

The fountain which was built in the Neo-Byzantine style is embroidered with golden mosaics inside and is decorated with the colorful stones and geometric motifs which represent the close relationship between Germany and the Ottoman Empire .
